In a significant development, the Bengaluru-based AI company Sarvam has entered into a five-year partnership with the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff (HQ IDS) under the Ministry of Defence (MoD). This agreement marks a major step in the development of artificial intelligence (AI) capabilities for the Indian Army, Navy, and Air Force.

The MoU, announced by HQ IDS on October 26, 2026, establishes a framework for AI projects that will enhance operational, training, and decision-support functions across the three services. Sarvam’s firewalled division, Chanakya, will lead the design, development, and deployment of these AI applications, ensuring that India’s defence capabilities are strengthened through indigenous technology.

Focus Areas of the Partnership

The collaboration between Sarvam and the MoD will focus on several key areas:

  • Decision Support: AI systems will assist in making informed decisions faster and more accurately.
  • Target Acquisition: Enhancing the precision and speed of identifying and engaging targets.
  • Data Fusion: Integrating data from various sources to provide a comprehensive view of the battlefield, known as the “sensor-to-shooter loop.”

These systems will be developed with human oversight to ensure that operational decisions remain under human control.

Sarvam’s Role and Capabilities

Sarvam’s Chanakya division will use advanced AI models, including the Sarvam 105B, to meet the partnership’s objectives. This model, launched earlier at the India AI Impact Summit, supports multiple Indian languages and is designed for secure, on-premise deployments. The AI layer will be built and deployed on sovereign infrastructure, aligning with India’s goal of self-reliance in defence technology.

Background and Previous Collaborations

Sarvam has been actively involved in developing AI solutions for defence. Earlier this year, the company collaborated with the Defence Services Staff College (DSSC) in Wellington to launch DRONA 2.0, an AI platform for training and research. This platform also utilizes Sarvam’s AI models and has been certified for security by HQ IDS and the Defence Cyber Agency.

Significance of the Partnership

This partnership is a critical component of India’s broader strategy to enhance its defence capabilities through AI. By collaborating with Sarvam, the MoD aims to integrate cutting-edge technology into military operations, training, and decision-making processes. This move also supports the government’s ‘Atmanirbharta’ initiative, promoting self-reliance in defence technology.

What this means for defence aspirants

For those preparing for defence careers, this development underscores the increasing importance of technology in military operations. Understanding AI and its applications in defence could become a valuable asset for future officers. Aspirants should stay informed about technological advancements and consider how these might impact their roles in the armed forces.
